Wheel hub bearings
![]() Brief introduction The traditional wheel hub bearing is composed of two sets of tapered roller bearings and ball bearings and the installation, lubrication, seal and clearance adjustment are conducted on the assembly line. This structure leads to difficulty in assembly in the car-manufacturing factories, high cost and inferior reliability. The bearing also needs cleaning, lubricating and adjusting when the car is maintained at the repair station. The wheel hub unit was developed on the basis of standard angular contact ball bearing and tapered roller bearing. Application to series of cars Audi Citroen Chrysler Fiat Ford Honda Nissan Opel Renault Rover Seat Toyota Volkswagen Advantages With the combination of them, the wheel hub bearing possesses the advantages of fine installation, no clearance adjustment, small weight, compact structure, strong load capacity, lubrication for seal ahead of time, no outer seal and maintenance-free etc. It has been widely applied to the cars and show the trend of a gradually broader application in the trucks. Developing process The vast majority of the wheel hub bearing for cars used to be combined by single-row tapered roller bearing and ball bearing in pairs. With the development of the technology, the wheel hub unit has been widely used in the cars and it has proceeded to the third generation. The first generation was composed of two-row angular contact bearings. There was a flange used for fixing the bearing on the outer raceway when it came to the second generation. It could easily mount the bearing to the wheel shaft and be fixed by screws so that the maintenance for cars became much easier. The third generation wheel hub unit uses the combination of bearing unit and ABS. It is composed of inner flange and outer flange. The former is fixed to the drive shaft by screw bolt and the latter connects the whole bearing. |
